Angelo Mangiarotti – Iconic Italian Designer and Master of Ceramic Vases for Gabbianelli
Angelo Mangiarotti (1921–2012) was a renowned Italian architect, designer, and sculptor, celebrated for his deep exploration of materials, form, and functionality in everyday objects. Born and trained in Milan, he graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1948, developing a design approach that combined architectural rigor with artistic sensitivity, applied both to buildings and objects of design.
Mangiarotti is particularly admired for his ceramic vases, where he applied the same attention to material, shape, and proportion that characterizes his architectural work. Among the most sought-after pieces are the vases he designed for the historic Italian manufacturer Gabbianelli, including the iconic “Vesuvio” vase, distinguished by its modern silhouette with recessed base, fluted neck, matte glazed ceramic finish, and signature “G” mark on the bottom.
These Italian enameled ceramic vases combine minimalist aesthetics, artisanal quality, and sculptural presence, representing iconic examples of 1960s–1970s Italian design. They remain highly prized by design collectors and vintage ceramic enthusiasts, perfectly embodying Mangiarotti’s vision of functional yet artistic forms.
Throughout his career, Mangiarotti collaborated with leading Italian and international design companies and received numerous awards, including the prestigious Compasso d’Oro for Lifetime Achievement. His legacy continues to influence architects, designers, and collectors worldwide.
