Campana Brothers: Contemporary Design, Materials and Experimentation

Humberto Campana and Fernando Campana, known as the Campana Brothers, are among the most influential contemporary designers from Brazil and a major force in 21st-century international design. Active since the late 1980s, they have redefined contemporary design language through a poetic and experimental approach deeply rooted in the creative use of materials.

Their work is distinguished by the ability to transform humble, industrial, or recycled materials into objects of strong aesthetic and conceptual value. The Campana Brothers constantly explore the boundary between art, design, and craftsmanship, developing furniture and installations characterized by compositional freedom, material layering, and unconventional production techniques. Their visual language is instantly recognizable and deeply connected to Brazilian cultural identity.

Among their most iconic creations is the Blow Up series for Alessi, a collection born from research into volume and void through seemingly random stainless-steel rod structures. The famous fruit holder, basket, and other objects from the series have become icons of contemporary design and are today part of major museum collections worldwide.

Alongside the stainless-steel version, the project also exists in an exceptionally rare handcrafted natural bamboo edition, known as the “Blow Up Bamboo Collection.” This version represents a more artisanal and organic interpretation of the original concept. The bamboo structure is entirely handmade, with each stick carefully tied and knotted together, emphasizing craft, rhythm, and structural spontaneity. Far from being a simple material variation, this bamboo version reflects a return to a more primitive and manual construction process, closer to the Campana Brothers’ Brazilian roots. It enhances the object’s lightness and organic presence, transforming it into a sculptural, almost architectural piece.

The Blow Up fruit holder in bamboo is therefore one of the rarest and most sought-after interpretations of the series, combining Alessi’s industrial design culture with the Campana Brothers’ experimental and poetic approach to natural materials.

Thanks to their ability to merge poetry, matter, and innovation, the Campana Brothers continue to influence global contemporary design, maintaining a central role in the international design landscape.
