Description
Luigi Caccia Dominioni (1913–2016) was a central figure in post-war Italian architecture and design, known for his rigorous, elegant, and highly functional approach. His design philosophy is defined by a balance between Milanese tradition, technical innovation, and meticulous attention to detail—elements that helped shape the language of contemporary Italian design.
In 1947, he founded in Milan Azucena, a brand that would become an international reference in high-end furniture and design. Azucena was established with the aim of producing essential yet sophisticated objects and furniture, characterized by pure lines, premium materials, and a strong focus on craftsmanship and construction quality.
Among his most iconic creations is the Grappolo chandelier, in its rare and highly sought-after large version with 4 glass globes. This design represents a perfect synthesis of form and function, with an aesthetic that can be interpreted as brutalist due to its essential, direct structure free from unnecessary ornamentation. At the same time, it remains strikingly contemporary, thanks to its geometric purity and sculptural presence.
The Grappolo features a balanced composition of metal elements and glass diffusers, producing a soft yet architectural light that interacts with space in a subtle but powerful way. The large 4-globe version is considered extremely rare on the market, both due to its limited production and the difficulty of finding original examples in preserved condition, making it a highly collectible piece sought after by architects and interior designers.
Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s creations for Azucena, including seating, lighting, and decorative objects, remain key references in authorial Italian design. His design language merges functionality with refinement, making each piece suitable for both residential and high-end contract environments.
Through a coherent vision between architecture and design, Azucena stands as a symbol of Made in Italy, expressing a sober, structural, and timeless elegance admired internationally.
