Some objects enter a collection because they are rare.
Others because they are beautiful.
And then there are those that, before they even arrive at the gallery, already have a story to tell.
This week, the protagonist is La Bocca della Verit\u00e0<\/strong>, the monumental bed designed by Mario Ceroli for Poltronova<\/strong> in the early 1970s.
An object that is, more than a bed, a sculpture you can inhabit<\/strong>.
And one that, for more than fifty years, had a home.
Since 1973, to be precise.
When the time came to take it away, however, we found ourselves facing a rather practical problem.
It would not fit through the door.
It was not a matter of dismantling it more carefully.
It was not a matter of finding the right angle.
It was simply too large.
So we did what seemed like the only possible thing:
we lowered it through the window of the third floor.<\/strong>
For a few minutes, La Bocca della Verit\u00e0 hung suspended between a home and the street, before beginning its journey towards a new destination.
And perhaps that is what makes certain objects so fascinating.
They are not simply pieces of furniture changing hands.
They are objects that, throughout their lives, change homes, change contexts and continue to accumulate stories.
Ceroli transformed a bed into something almost monumental: a large mouth carved in wood, inspired by Rome\u2019s famous Bocca della Verit\u00e0<\/strong>. Produced by Poltronova as part of the Mobili nella Valle<\/em> series, the work belongs to a pivotal period in Italian design, when the boundaries between art, sculpture and furniture were becoming increasingly fluid. But there is something no catalogue can tell you.
The fact that someone actually slept there.
For fifty years.
That this wood witnessed everyday life, rather than simply occupying an exhibition space.
That before becoming a collectible design piece, it was simply a bed.
And perhaps this is the part that interests us most.
Because recovering historic Italian design<\/strong> is not simply about saving objects.
It means accepting that every object carries a memory that does not entirely belong to us, yet that we continue to preserve.
And when a piece like this passes through a third-floor window, it is not merely changing location.
It is travelling through time.<\/strong>
It leaves behind a home that contained it for half a century and searches for another one willing to do the same: not merely to accommodate it, but to continue its story without bringing it to an end.
Perhaps this is the true meaning of collecting.
Not ownership.
But choosing which stories deserve not to end.
And which ones are worth allowing to begin again.<\/p>

MARIO CEROLI: THE ARTIST BEHIND LA BOCCA DELLA VERIT\u00c0
Mario Ceroli (1938, Castel Frentano)<\/strong> is one of the most important figures in Italian art and design of the second half of the twentieth century. A sculptor, artist and creator of iconic furniture pieces, Ceroli is known for his distinctive visual language based on raw wood and the transformation of the human figure into archetypal, monumental forms.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Ceroli emerged in the 1960s as a leading figure associated with Arte Povera<\/strong>, the movement that radically transformed the relationship between materials, space and artistic language. His works are distinguished by the use of untreated wood, cut into two-dimensional silhouettes that become theatrical installations and immersive environments.
Among his most important collaborations was his work with Poltronova<\/strong>, the historic Italian design company for which he created the celebrated Mobili nella Valle<\/em> series.It was within this context that the La Bocca della Verit\u00e0 bed<\/strong> was created, around 1972. One of Ceroli\u2019s most iconic projects, the bed takes its inspiration from Rome\u2019s legendary Bocca della Verit\u00e0 and transforms it into a monumental object that brings together function and sculpture, furniture and contemporary art<\/strong>.Ceroli\u2019s work occupies a space between sculpture, stage design and Italian radical design<\/strong>, making him a key figure in the dialogue between contemporary art and collectible furniture. His works can today be found in major public and private collections around the world.<\/h2>

THE \u201cLA BOCCA DELLA VERIT\u00c0\u201d BED: DESIGN AND MEANING<\/h2>

Mario Ceroli\u2019s La Bocca della Verit\u00e0 bed<\/strong> is one of the most representative works of 1970s Italian design. Created for Poltronova as part of the Mobili nella Valle<\/em> series, the project was born from the idea of transforming an everyday object into an inhabitable sculpture<\/strong>.<\/p>

The bed takes its inspiration from Rome\u2019s famous Bocca della Verit\u00e0, reinterpreted by Ceroli as a monumental wooden structure surrounding the space of rest.<\/p>

It is not simply a piece of furniture, but a three-dimensional installation that merges art, architecture and design<\/strong>.<\/p>
